Leadership is often misunderstood as a position or title. Many believe that holding a certain rank automatically makes someone a leader. Yet, true leadership goes far beyond a formal role. It is a state of being, reflected in how a person shows up in every situation, makes decisions, and works with others to achieve meaningful results.

Leading others is knowing when to direct and when to follow
Leadership Is How You Show Up
Leadership starts with presence. It is about the attitude and energy you bring to every interaction. An effective leader listens actively, communicates clearly, and remains calm under pressure. These qualities build trust and respect, which are essential for influencing others.
Consider a team member who volunteers to help solve a problem without waiting for instructions. Their willingness to step up shows leadership in action. This behavior encourages others to contribute and creates an environment where ideas flow creatively.
Making Decisions That Matter
Leadership involves making choices that affect others. Good leaders weigh options carefully, consider the impact on people, and take responsibility for outcomes. They do not avoid difficult decisions or pass the blame when things go wrong. Leaders partner with others to find the best solutions and outcomes, often using mistakes as opportunities to learn and grow individually or as a team.
Leading Through Others
True leadership is not about doing everything yourself. It is about guiding and supporting others to reach their potential. This means recognizing strengths, providing feedback, and creating opportunities for growth.
It is about having the courage to provide honest feedback with empathy and care. Our greatest learning often comes from facing challenges knowing we have the support of others with us.
Leadership Without a Title
Many people lead without formal authority. In a work setting a senior person often provides training or guidance to a more junior person. In other areas of life teachers, mentors, coaches and volunteers influence others through their actions and values. Leadership is accessible to everyone willing to take responsibility and act with integrity.
As a coach and mentor I help others find a path to achieve results in a way that is consistent with their values and the practices in their company. While I don't have formal authority, I influence their outcomes by helping them create plans grounded in the type of leaders they want to be. I do this thorugh curiousity, empathy and challenging choices.

Practical Ways to Develop Leadership
Anyone can cultivate leadership by focusing on key behaviors:
Be present and engaged in conversations and tasks.
Communicate clearly and listen to understand.
Take initiative to address challenges or opportunities.
Support others by sharing knowledge and encouragement.
Own your decisions and learn from mistakes.
Stay adaptable and open to new ideas.
Leadership’s Lasting Impact
Leadership shapes culture and drives results. When people lead with authenticity and care, they create environments where collaboration thrives and goals are met. This impact goes beyond individual success and benefits the whole team.
Coach's Corner
Reflect on leaders you admire. Often, their power comes from how they treat others and the example they set, not just their formal authority. Leadership is a way of being that anyone can embrace.
In my business career having a coach has always been a critical part of my success. Leadership can be lonely and my coach has given me someone to bounce ideas off of and talk through the challenges I was facing. They helped me find solutions by channelling my inner guidance to create outcomes that balanced my values with practical outcomes.
In my practice I am proud to work with leaders in a variety of positions to help them align their actions and values to achieve the best outcomes. Your life is yours to live. As your coach I will come beside you and help align your results with the leader you want to be.
